We suggest you do your own research on the health risks associated with what you drink from but here are things that you may have already read about and information about our DIY PromoMug.
There are several studies out that demonstrate that toxic chemicals in plastics containers (such as BPA) leach in the drinks they are holding – particularly when heated (either intentionally with warm drinks or unintentionally via exposure to the sun, microwaves or dishwashers). It has already resulted in the ban on the sale of certain plastic baby bottles in States like California.
Most reusable travel mugs (which are better for the environment than always buying coffee in disposable cups) are made of the same rigid plastics that contain BPA. Since the liquid it holds is hot (coffee or tea), the probability of chemicals leaching into drinks held in plastic is quite high.
What are most commonly recommended for holding hot or warm drinks (from a safety standpoint) are either glass/ceramic or stainless steel. Glass/Ceramic is not very durable as a travel companion but are all Stainless Steel Mugs great to drink from?
We again invite you to do your own research but most stainless steel travel mugs put the steel on the outside and still have a plastic drinking liner. This is purely a cosmetic design. Even most with a stainless steel liner use a low grade of steel (usually #201) which requires it to be lined with epoxy. What is epoxy? Plastic, meaning you are still drinking from a plastic container when using this mug type (note that canned foods are now being found to have high levels of BPA due to their lining - plastic).
Our DIY PromoMug uses a medical grade stainless steel (#304) which is electro polished to seal the surface and prevent leaching (versus lining with epoxy/plastic). The result is a travel mug that looks great, is customizable BUT more importantly does not impart a taste nor leach toxic chemicals into your drink.
We are not the only manufacturer that use such materials and processes but if you are concerned about the safety of your drink ware (particularly for hot liquids) ask or check labels before buying. Most travel mugs on the market (stainless steel or not) use a plastic liner.
DID YOU KNOW almost all the take-out "paper" coffee cups you drink from are lined to prevent leaking - lined with plastic!
